Commonly referred to as "addiction", I prefer the terms substance misuse or substance related issues as it is harmonious with person first care. High risk behavior is a term that refers to any coping strategy that has become self-destructive. It may seem a matter of semantics. However, as an embodied steward of holistic recovery and trauma focused care, the terms fit an empathetic, logical, and clinically sound approach. My personal, professional, and academic expertise with these topics naturally lends itself to this compassionate perspective.
